Chretien is telling us:No need for war, Chrétien tells Americans Bush has already won, PM says on Sunday talk show OTTAWA (CP) — There is no need for war with Iraq, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien told a U.S. television news show today. "In my judgment, it has been won," Chrétien said in a 15-minute taped interview. "You know the (U.S.) president has won. I have no doubt about it. He won." The interview, taped Saturday at Chrétien's home in Shawinigan, Que., aired this morning on the ABC program This Week with George Stephanopoulos. The ABC Web site describes it as an exclusive interview with Chrétien, who is "trying to bridge the gap between America and its allies." In moving troops to Iraq's borders, U.S. President George W. Bush has "created a situation" where Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein "cannot do anything anymore," Chrétien said. He said the U.S. and Britain have troops at the door and there are inspectors on the ground ... "and he (Hussein) cannot do anything, and he started to destroy missiles; there's no nuclear danger there." Chrétien also talked about the Canadian discussion paper circulated at the United Nations in late February and the current proposal put forward by Britain and the U.S. to give Hussein a deadline of March 17 to disarm. During a state visit to Mexico in late February, Chrétien said the concept of "regime change," as stated by the White House, is a dangerous one. He called for a peaceful compromise. <all the things that can go wrong> I'm sort of thinking, maybe it's time for the Doves to shut up. the Hawks have their rope, and seem very determined to hang themselves. And they will not be amenable to discussion of Alternatives, until they feel that rope, the rope they put around their own neck, choking them. Then it will be time to talk, because then they will be in the right frame of mind to listen. But till then, until they see that their methods aren't working, there is very little chance of converting any Hawks into Doves. Afghanistan worked for them. Regime Change in Iraq will too, I'm guessing. But I am sceptical that the Nation-Building is going to go as planned. And I'm real sceptical, that the Regime Change goes as planned, in N. Korea or Iran or Syria or anywhere else. Now, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe we will Build a wonderful nation in Iraq, and the Dominoes will fall one by one, and everyone will be Shocked and Awed into submission. And if that happens, there isn't much point in Doves saying anything. But if it doesn't, then there is an Alternative, and we will have a lot to say.
