Taiwan is not formally recognized as a sovereign country by the rest of the world. Actually, I'm not.. Taiwan ROC (the Chinese nationalist government) was one of the founding members of the UN. It was ALSO a permanent member of the UNSC until 1971. And Taiwan held a seat in the UN until 1971, when pressured by Nixon to give it up and hand it over to Bejing. Even though the communists (PRC) may have taken over the mainland, the US did not recognize the Bejing government, nor did most of the UN.. Furthermore, it was TAIWAN(ROC) that voted for the resolution that permitted UN participation in the Korean conflict (police action). In fact, Russia boycotted the Korean War vote that led to UN participation in opposing North Korean aggression, primarily becase the UN membership did not recognize Communist China. Had Russia vetoed that UNSC resolution, the Korean War would have been strictly a US affair, not a UN operation (very similar to the situation we have today). Thus, in 1971, Nixon and the rest of the UN, by fiat, suddenly rescinded Taiwan's status as a nation/state, ERASING IT'S LEGITIMACY, despite its independent and semi-democratic (at that time) government, definable boundaries, and the distinct historical culture that Mao had tried his level best to obliterate. By what right did Nixon or the UN rescind Taiwan's political status?? Who gave them that right to deny a democratically elected nation their soveriegnty and effectively subjugate them to a totalitarian state?? And why hasn't the UN rescinded North Korea's political status since it was clearly an aggressor state against the south, and thus, undeserving of possessing the status of "state"?? So clearly Taiwan WAS a country.. and with the signing of a stroke of a pen, its right to exist was wiped out.. And it appears that both Belize and Guatemata still recognize Taiwan as a legitimate country (with many others still having economic and cultural delegations in Taipei):embassyworld.com And look at the 44 nations where Taiwan has their own economic delegations...embassyworld.com Who decides which governments are legitimate and which are not?? Other governments. Bingo.. But I guess you're going to tell us that it requires a majority of nations voting in the UN (or otherwise) to officially recognize a political/economic entity as a "state"?? So maybe you should be more careful before you declare something as "ridiculous".. Because before 1971, recognizing Communist China was viewed in just the same way.. Hawk
