I think the opposite is true. The Saudis did pretend to be our friends. This has been said again and again by the entire political spectrum. They took out 20 page magazine spreads in The Economist, Time, Newsweek in the months after 9-11. They defended themselves & said the 9-11 hijackers were nothing more than fanatics. Publicly, they said they were aiding in the terror war, but FBI & CIA agents trying to gather info on the hijackers were rebuffed at every turn. They are far more backstabbing than the French.
The French are very upfront with their views on America. They are scared of the US being the only superpower. I think the French are naive re Hussein, but hey I'd MUCH RATHER LIVE IN FRANCE THAN SAUDI ARABIA.
