If your overriding principle is to deal only with democratic regimes then you're really advocating an extreme isolationist position for the economy that regularly captures more than 80% of the world's savings. Is that realistic or even productive?

We supported Iraq against Iran because Iran's theocracy was then considered the greater threat. Remember the hostage crisis? But the support was limited. In fact we were actually rooting for both Iraq and Iran to bludgeon each other to a debilitating stalemate, which they eventually did.

Peace at all costs is only a prelude to disaster, Jim. If history has taught us anything, it is that.
