90% of the game ahead is a diplomacy game and Bush needs to learn how to play that game well NOW.

A good deal of learning to play that game is learning that statements made for home consumption get play in other places too. The leaders of the other democratic nations have to answer to their own people, and while tough talk may play well in Peoria, it makes the jobs of allied leaders infinitely more difficult.

Nice summation Paul. I have felt the same and unless Bush and his administration suddenly become more adroit they may be painting themselves into a corner where they lose whichever way it goes.

..I am losing confidence in Bush very quickly. If he loses Blair, far from clear, he will lose my support.

Chin up, me boy.

Should Blair take the UK out of the fray, it is not because Bush "lost" him; it would be as a result of internal UK domestic politics over which Bush has little control.

I'm not convinced that Blair will fall. He won the last vote decisively despite 122 Labor votes cast against him. The Tories are saving him, and they are much more principled and conservative. Don't look for the Tories to make political hay out of Blair's problems with his Labor colleagues.

Paul,
I complement you on an open mind.

I like to think I have one too.

We are still all Americans/Canadians and love democracy and we can pull together like no other group. There will be a way out of this and in 10 years we'll all look back at it and say: "Whew, we dodged that bullet."

The good thing that has happened is that a whole group now has new knowledge of politics and world-affairs. This resource will be important as we go forward.

Hope things are rosier this AM, Paul. But seriously, what more could Bush do about Blair...? He is from a Socialist Labor Party, and the far left of that party evidently must like Saddam more....

What would you have done, and what would you do here?

Now, if Bush can't provide Blair enough political cover, it will be the mother of all screw ups.
