Lol, I've often thought to post these guys biographies when I hear the "these guys are only academics" dismissal, but Merton being a co-ounder of Long Term Capital has always been the thorn in my side to prevent it. In eight months of having posting that OP Ed piece here and there from time to time, you are the first fellow that has made the connection. Hey, at least all three of these guys have some non academic experience.

Kaplan has two engineering degrees from MIT to go along with PHD from Cornell. Like many Harvard B professors, he consults for companies worldwide and is the creator of the reasonably well known "Balanced Scorecard". Kaplan's bio:

Regardless of Merton's co-founding of Long Term Capital, I agree with the analysis in that OP Ed piece with regard to accounting for stock options. These same guys have a nine page analysis of stock option accounting in the February Harvard Business Review if you are interested:
