We already have that responsibility. We can't avoid it:
the Arabs already hold us responsible for anything nasty Israel does
we already, de facto, have given a security guarantee to Israel
every time we try to do anything, anywhere in the Middle East, it's made more difficult because there is no peace in Palestine. Our entire agenda is hostage to this issue.
We are the Hegemon; the influence of all the other Powers who used to have responsibilities in the Middle East, has evaporated: Soviet Union, Britain, France

To put it simply: we cannot win the War On Terrorism, if we don't have access and info given by a long list of Muslim countries, and that help will always be given grudgingly and partially, as long as the Israili-Palestinian war goes on. You don't want to become engaged on this issue, because you see how hard it is; I see no choice, if our broader goals are going to have any chance of success.

It would also give America the responsibility of making and keeping an Arab-Israeli peace, a prospect about as inviting as that of stuffing the intimate bits into a meatgrinder and turning it on.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Question of the day: Is that particular prospect any more daunting than the upcoming Iraq occupation? Sort of the devil you know versus the other one, in my view.

But your point goes to my primary issue with the Iraq situation. Once we're in, Iraq is our problem for the indefinite future. On the other hand, I used to worry that having the military tied down long term in Iraq was a problem, now I'm tending to think of it as a solution.

The US already has that responsibility as Israel's Godfather. The problem became urgent on 9-11.
