"Maybe you could help me see it."

I doubt that I can Chris. I have already offered my best shot. However, I don't think it was her desire to glorify OBL. It certainly isn't mine. I can see how uneducated, desolate persons in the world who are suffering in the physical (starvation and illness) and emotional sense (hopelessnes) are beginning to organize around the only direction offered to them, World revolution against world power. Not something that I support or agree with but definitely happening and not in a small way.

Maybe you could help me see it.

Making comparisons is always risky. The two things being compared may each have a hundred characteristics, 99 of which are different, but the intended point of comparison is the one thing they have in common. I may compare a bluebird to my curtains when the only thing they have in common is the color. It doesn't matter than my curtains can't fly or the bluebird isn't house trained if I'm trying to provide an insight on the color.

If there is a single thread of commonality between our colonial revolutionaries and bin Laden, and Jewel pointed out what that might be, then the comparison has its point. It may be stupid to articulate for a politician because of all the baggage of the other 99 characteristics and their potential to obfuscate and because of the sensitivity of the comparison, but not necessarily invalid. I think it is an overreaction to condemn people who offer comparisons that have too great a baggage to insight ratio, as this one did, for anything more that poor judgment.

In this case, we should all be able to relate to the desires of those who feel oppressed to rebel and lash out against whatever bogeyman they see. That their tactics have little in common and that their alleged oppressors have little in common destroy the effectiveness of the comparison as a communication device but don't necessarily put words in the mouth of the speaker.
