that was different hueyone- in Andy Groves time we had no global competition.

I was afraid you were going to mention that, but couldn't Japan have been considered a legitimate contender? I seem to recall a period in the eighties where seome people were ready to sign the death certificates for Silicon Valley, and thinking that the miracle Japanese economy was going to crush us.

They aren't locked into engineering I mean, they can go to law or any number of fields.

I think I disagree with you on this point---although admittedly I am not as close to the situation as you are. Nevertheless, I remember about a year and a half ago on the Cisco thread, before a lot of the layoffs, that you suggested that if companies were not so generous with options, that all these mid level managers and engineers would leave the companies and contract out their consulting services at $300 or more an hour. A year and a half later I see your figure has changed to $150 an hour---supply and demand at work. I think that number will go lower if market conditions warrant it. I suspect there are plenty of people that will be willing to work for less rather than change professions if things are tight. Changing professions is not that easy and it isn't like the money is flowing freely in other fields right now either.
