Sentiment Bashed to Decade Low - Report

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Looming war in Iraq and rising layoffs battered U.S. consumer sentiment to its lowest level in more than a decade in March as widespread gloom about the economic outlook shows few signs of letting up any time soon.

The University of Michigan's preliminary March index of consumer sentiment fell for a third straight month to 75.0, its lowest since October 1992, from 79.9 in February, market sources told Reuters on Friday. Economists had forecast a slide to 77.6.

The steady erosion of confidence is taking its toll, hurting crucial spending by consumers that drives two-thirds of the U.S. economy and is needed to fuel a robust recovery.
