The Spanish-American War was the cusp event,
when America stopped adding territory that would become States (democratic, equal to the previous States)
and started adding territory (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Phillipines, Guam)
that would be treated as un-assimilable subject peoples
held by Force, not "the consent of the governed".
That was when we abandoned the ideals of Jefferson and Adams.
Since 1895, when we send our soldiers abroad,
when we increase the global footprint held by the U.S. Army
(which extends far beyond what we have formally annexed)
We have been Conquerors not Liberators.
Hamilton would have approved, but he was a closet Monarchist.
Jefferson, the Best American, would be appalled at what we have become.
