Al-Qaeda is the terrorist organisation (remember them? anyone?) and it has no ties to Iraq, a place they don't even like because it is secular and not an Islamic place. WMDs as an excuse for Iraq's invasion is a joke. If Saddam has any left he clearly has not used them, nor threatened to, in the past decade. In fact, if he has any WMDs, the worst possible way to go about making sure he does not use them is to tell him you will invade his country and kill him no matter what he does because he is evil. Exactly what Bush is doing. It's a simple, good old fashioned obsession That assumes Bush et al are all psychotic, a proposition I am not prepared to accept at this point. Bush and everyone around him including Rice and Powell are oil people. I do not think that is a coincidence. I have a lot of trouble accepting it's about oil. It is about geopolitical power. And oil. Oil is the deepest and strongest "dependency infrastructure" on earth, if I may borrow a term from Frank Herbert's Dune series. Controlling Iraq's oil will make the US the true master of this planet, not only because it will no longer have to bow to Saudi et al, but also because it will hold the "key log" on which the dependencies of countries heavily dependent on oil imports, like Japan and Germany. Why is the US acting now, and why did it not act before? Because as a democracy, it needed an excuse of sorts to convince its public. "Let's go invade Iraq, kill thousands of civilians, and trash international law and order" somehow does not have the same ring as "He is evil and we are scared someone might attack us again so let's attack this tyrant".
