RE: "...someone has to step in and force both sides into it."

No, there are no "benevolent despots" around to do it. There are no nations or organizations of nations to be trusted.

Sharon is the best friend the Palestinians have. He is straight forward and consistent and he live in their neighborhood. Embrace peace and Israel will make painful sacrifices. Embrace violence and you will die.

The corollary is, Embrace peace and Sharon will be replaced by the likes of Rabin and Barak who will make greater sacrifices.

RE: "... killing the other side is very popular in each camp."

I don't believe Israelis want to kill Palestinians. I believe that Israelis believe that the Arabs and the Palestinians want to destroy their state.

Jacob's proposal of Israel as the 51st state has merits

I am not familiar with exactly what the proposal offers, but if Israel were to become an American state, then any American resident could go and live there, right?

I do not know how many Palestinian-Americans there are, but what if they decide to move to the 51st American state and live there? What if a million or so Arab-Americans & other Muslims of American nationality go to Israel, elect their own people, and start running the country? Say bye-bye to your "Jewish state"...

(Just food for thought for the more paranoid people among us :-)
