I have seen interviews of the settlers to the contrary.

> Israelis believe that the Arabs and the Palestinians want to destroy their state

And you don't think that create a deadly combination of anger and fear among Israelis? And perhaps deadly hatred?

> there are no "benevolent despots" around to do it.

Perhaps not. I suspect US is the most likely candidate, but I agree that Israel is the best to do it if they can. I think most Palestinians would be happy to not to kill Israelis in exchange for work and good life while continuing to hate them. This is a workable start because the secession of physical hostilities is the first step towards secession of hostile attitudes. Once they are busy making a living and have goals other than becoming a martyr, Israel should start to educate both sides. The problem is that I don't think there is anyone who could stop some Palestinians from violence no matter how hard they try or what the consequences.

Sharon type solutions do not work because a sufficiently large minority can easily derail it. We are not dealing with logic here. It is a matter of emotions. The only time I have seen this type of problems solved (and I've only seen it on individual levels) has been when the stronger party has been willing to allow the other side blow off steam (sometimes a lot of steam and for a long time) while actively trying to help the "ungrateful bastard". I can't see this being practical here. Though is Israel pulls it off I'll find it even a greater success than Gandhi's.
