I remember that lunatic Alan Dershowitz screaming about a "coup d'etat" just after the election. I just laughed.

You obviously have no idea what the phrase means. Even if you figure it out, what happened in Florida was not a coup d'etat. Gore's advisors saw he lost the election. Lost, not was about to lose or might lose.

In order to try and turn that around and make a winner out of a loser, Gore and his team of experts challenged the election by attempting to short circuit the legal election process and polarize the entire country. He started his scheme by asking for a recount in just three Democratically controlled counties, and not the entire state. He failed in his bizarre attempt to manipulate the law, but he did start an interesting trend amongst liberals; the assumption that when they conclude the law is wrong they have a duty to challenge it (not necessarily wrong), but also that they don't even need to pay any attention to the law in the first place.

"If I decide the law is wrong for me, then Al Gore has shown me that I can break the law in whatever manner I see fit for my own purposes, because I am right regardless of the fact that I am breaking the law."

In other words, the ends justify the means. If you actually believe that, then you will end up with no freedom and democracy at all. This convoluted Gorethink is one of the many reasons why GWB will win the election by a landslide in 2004, no matter whom you decide you want to put up against him.
