Wouldn't you think it possible that the 50% of the American public which does not support a war would consider purchasing French goods in preference to, for example, British?

Bush could raise trade barriers against France, I suppose, but since he just retreated on that very subject (steel and agriculture) I don't see how it would work better this time.
