" If we are not now at the mercy of the least rational, least humane, least responsible pack of yahoos who ever seized control of the American war machine, then I have learned exactly nothing in 35 years as a professional observer. A friend of mine, a veteran centrist congressman, admits to the most "personal antipathy" he has ever felt toward an occupant of the White House. "

>>How about this, we both wish that our troops will soon be out of harms way. Surely we can agree on that.

Absolutely.

>>Consider that we both may be very patriotic, it's just that we perceive differing threats.

Unlike other "pro government" folks I don't assume that all Anti-war believers are not patriotic. It would be like believing that the American government always lies to the public. Neither position is fair or helpful. Unfortunately we all fall into the "negotiation" strategy of giving you opponents no quarter.

However, I do believe that your position hurts the soldiers attempting to carry out American Government policies. The French position NEVER to support a timetable that eventually leads to military action if conditions are not met is similar. It has weakened the effort to force Iraq to comply with UN mandates.

Also, I tend to believe what the elected government says despite the past liars who occupied public offices. Also, I don't believe in throwing out the baby with the bath water. Just because Clinton or Nixon lied doesn't mean that Bush is lying. I happen to believe that he has the worst job in the world. He cannot possibly be correct in the eyes of all.

I've held positions of "authority" over people. A good leader listens to all view and makes the best decision he can. You know someone isn't going to be happy with your decisions. You're between a rock and a hard place and it's not fun.

I happen to think that Bush is an honest man trying to do the right thing for the country and the world. When I hear people say this is all about oil or "supporting the defense industry" I become unglued. Is Korea all about oil? Was Panama all about oil? How about Kosovo?

Also, do you think personal attacks on the man really accomplish anything? Does calling him the "dumbest" President ever (Helen Thomas) or an embarrassment (various Hollywood types) really accomplish any more than calling you "unpatriotic."

This morning it was reported that there were various attempts to deface several portraits of Saddam Hussein around Iraq. Do you know the penalty for this "crime?" Death?

I heard the last American ambassador to Iraq tell of Saddam's offer to his "friends" after invading Kuwait. "Leave us alone and we'll sell you plenty of cheap oil." Would that have been the right thing to do? It would have spared many Iraqi lives, but what about the Kuwaitis?

I wrote the editor of "Commondreams." I reminded him of the brutality of an unopposed Hitler in the early stages of WWII. His response was, "We are not appeasing Hitler. We are BECOMING Hitler."

I said, "We could have stopped Hitler! We didn't. The French caved. The Brits caved. Why? Because of public opinion and leaders with opinions like you! The results were the deaths of millions of people. IF we become "Hitler" I will be there with you fighting against this government, until then I am against you.
