Lindy, I love you like a brother, but the image of Al Qaeda types squatting on a dungheap, shaking their fists at jet liners passing by overhead isn't congruent with the sat-phone/lap-top using Al Qaeda members who used those same jet liners as weapons against our largest buildings on 9/11.

Also, as I've said before, I agree with bin Laden about the sanctions. That's why we should have gotten rid of Saddam long, long ago.

The problem that Bin Laden, et al, have with us is that we are successful, and they are not.

Perhaps that's true about seven inferences beyond the obvious. But the obvious is they are focused on creating Islamic fundamentalist states in the ME and see us as the major block to that happening. They use things like 9-11 and, of course, the upcoming Iraq invasion, as recruiting devices because they can spin them as civilizational crises.

The problem that Bin Laden, et al, have with us is that we are successful, and they are not. This goes against everything they believe from the Koran. They think Islam should be ruling the world and the fact that they are not means we are the spawn of Satan...As long as we can keep these types disorganized and on the run...we can keep them at bay.

Now could I paraphrase you as "they oppose our national existence out of envy, jealousy and ill-concealed pride...We do not want a second catastrophe along the lines of 9/11. We depend not on the grace of our enemy, rather on military might..."?

Tell me how much time you have spent living with the middle easterners to come to such conclusion? And how much you know about their culture beyond what you see on TV? It seems to me that US support of governments that are loathed by about 90% of their local population can do more to make them hate us than jealousy of our success.
