You gave the impression that the French helped the American revolutionaries out of the kindness of their heart. Not true. They were playing an earlier version of a game that they and some Americans love to criticize the US for: Afghanistan. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Do you think Loius XVI would have done that had the thought even occurred to him that it would blow up in his face by inspiring his own people to revolt?

I see this French/German/Belgian alliance as a sort of attempted counterweight to US prominence. This seems inimical to me to the purposes of our various treaties and alliances with the French.
