I think Bush will find out how much Americans overwhelmingly support HIM in 04.

The problem with polls are, they are too much "of the moment"- almost all americans are going to "support the president"- today. Even me, I support the US troops and the USA when we are at war. But I sure won't vote for Bush next time around and I don't think anybody else will either. The only thing that can derail a Bush defeat is if the Dems put up someone not moderate enough, a Nancy Pelosi-type.

The problem is not that Americans overwhelmingly support this action but that public officials (in both parties, I might add) resist making difficult decisions that might go against popular opinion.

It may be that the political atmosphere is so charged that no one has the guts to make a difficult decision. That would be unfortunate. The climate has changed since the time I first worked overseas during the last term of Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was actually quite a conservative Republican, but he never let ideology get in the way of solving problems. He appointed judges with plenty of experience and moderate views. He identified what he felt would be a grave problem in later years--dealing with the military industrial complex. He would be a good role model for this administration.
