Friday evening I did a bit of channel surfing...happened on CPAC. They showed an interview with 2 Iraqi-Canadians that was very interesting. Here are a few points made by the guests. When asked if they approved of the war, they described life in Iraq....the people have been living with war for 35 years. The cause/blame was all the fault of the Saddam Hussein regime. They talked about living thru 40 days of bombing in the Gulf War and said the worst thing was that when the bombing stopped, Hussein was still in power. They supported the war and their hope was that it would be finished properly this time so the Iraqi people could finally quit living in fear and recover their pride and once again become the "pearle of society" as they put it. They told stories about life in Iraq and living in fear as the Iraqi people do and I doubt anyone could have listened without being touched...gaining some understanding of the hell that Iraq has been. They mentioned the search for WMDs...said that even if the coalition did not discover the physical nuclear bomb, the real WMD is Hussein and the destruction has already been done to Iraq by him. They prayed for the people of Iraq (families and friend left behind) but also prayed that the war would liberate them from the tyrant. They were asked about the "perceived illegitimacy" by some of the war. The answer was that Iraq would never forget the french....how the french, for whatever selfish reason, did everything they possibly could to destroy a solid backing for the removal of Hussein. They blamed the french for setting aside the people of Iraq, ignoring their suffering. They said that the french support of Hussein only strengthened his resolve to hold on to power...keep stalling as the protests of the war grew in numbers. They felt that had the french not destroyed the resolve of the international community, had the world united to help disarm Hussein, he would likely had went into exile. They seem to hold the french totally responsible for the war and are thankful for the resolve of the coalition that is now sacrificing to help their people. One of them even said that the Iraqi people will never forget the french and that they hold the french responsible for every drop of Iraqi blood spilled in removing the dictator. Asked about canada's refusal to participate, the feeling was that they would have felt better had their adopted country helped with the liberation efforts by participation. I don't think there was any animosity, but there was genuine disappointment. One even brushed it off by saying canada is irrelevant. I have seen several pictures on the internet and some news clips on tv that show the Iraqi people greeting their liberators...offering thanks. It is a shame that selfish hatred, some of which is being displayed here, is clouding vision so badly that the REAL victims....the real reason for this conflict is conveniently ignored.
