I'm about half way through the Lincoln Chafee article. Obviously, the Times thinks he's the next Jim Jeffords. Let me, also, recommend, once again, Paul Berman's essay on Qutb in this issue. It is superb. Paul Philp will like it because the argument about technological civilization has serious echoes of Jacques Ellul. Berman concludes by arguing that Qutb is an extraordinarily serious thinker, one which, at that level, requires serious thought about and response from defenders of the separation of state and church. Bush is, for a variety of reasons, not that; nor Blair, for that matter. Berman is arguing there needs to be a serious and deep defense of the principle of the separation as one of the various means of pulling the globe away from religious fascism (my term). Again, well worth reading, thinking about, etc. I owe you an apology, public. And am just now getting around to it because we've been hitting the high spots of a beautiful Jersey Saturday evening. I typed "vituperative" to characterize the characterization of "mealy-mouthed." I should not have done that. I was coming off using that word to describe Bill Tippett's post and felt the word was not strong enough. I hit your comment, typed vituperative again. But knew something was wrong. After completing my tour of the thread, I was checking back, discovered that post but it was too late to change. Started typing an apology but my wife was well past the waiting point to hit the road. And I wanted to take a moment to think about the wording. So, here it is, belated, but nonetheless. Big mistake on my part. I owe you one.
