Thanks for your reply Jacob.

I can only say that we think we have an idea worth protecting with our lives. Just as I suspect the strong believers of Islam or Bath'ism or Socialism or Communism do. We just happen to be better at it than most due to the strong.....and in my opinion correct.......belief in the righteousness of that idea. Right or wrong we have achieved great power as a result of this belief, and because of our strong commitment, we are certainly doomed to suffer serious threats by those who wish they were in our position.

Millions have given their time, and hundreds of thousands their lives to protect that idea. If others can't see the merits of that basic premise, it may take millions more to make it clearer. I don't doubt that there will be much more human suffering to achieve our objectives.

I can't think of any other idea as liberating as democracy or worthy of such sacrifice irregardless of the apparent flaws inherent in that idea. The flaws that the common man is given the power to make right through the legal system. Isn't this right the right that every man on earth deserves? The right we protect with our lives?

These questions are rhetorical, but IMO this is why, in the long run, we will prevail.

M

<<<Public opinion polls already say that Bush, not Saddam or Kim, is seen as the biggest threat to global peace. And I don't mean just in Palestine or Pakistan, I mean in places like England and Japan, who should be our natural allies.>>>
Public opinion in Iraq says that Saddam should remain in power- he got nearly 100% of the vote.
The world has changed and a Global Power has a much different meaning than it did before the H-bomb,
which makes any nation who has nuclear power nearly as powerful as any other since no one dares to use it
Today a global power is the country that can form the greatest coalition when the chips are down or the swords are drawn The US has done that very effectively twice, once in 1991 and again in todays 40 Nation plus coalition which was formed in spite of the apparent world hatred for America.
The world did not sudenly hate America, and hate is not a useful world, and GWB was not President when it started and will not be around more than 2 or 6 years.
The worlds press has become like the British tabloids predicting disasters whenever changes occur and so is not a useful opinion poll. Responsible now for a great deal of confusion in the world
The US if successful in Iraq, will next bomb N. Korea and Iran ? Pure speculation and far from the truth
All the world will turn against us ? Speculation again
What were the choices ?
1. Appease the Terrorists and let their threats decide our future. They did not hold us hostage and ask for appeasement- they just stepped in and blew away as many inhabitants as they could. They will blow up any Nations airplanes except perhaps their own, if they even have a Nation. What appeasement do the Muslims want?
Do they want us to adopt the Muslim Faith, and thus qualify us to conduct, even demand, a Jihad of our own
to eliminate them?
I certainly see no clear way to being the "good guys" which we may not even have been considered to be in the past, even if we thought we were. Not in Germany- not in Japan- not in Russia, and aparently not even in France
And due to lack of the Presses attention or interest, we have had little indication as to how Africans, Russian citizens, Chinese citizens, South Americans look upon US citizens. In an opinion poll
I am not the one with ideas on how to achieve world peace.
It is useful to present such ideas but even the best and simplist ideas would only be acceptable to a bit over 50% of the worlds inhabitants. And even that would require a world wide poll of all people which could not be valid since people under a dictatorship like Iraq would not be willing to expose their true feelings.
That being the case, it will require power and force to impose conditions of world peace
And trust me, somebody is going to hate that- which ruins the peace.
Until then, its better to be , than not to be, a self directed and powerful Nation
Montezuma ,I believe it was, gave a room filled with gold to the Spaniards to appease them. So they killed him
F--- appeasement
