Byrd Hails White Supremacist as
'My Mentor'

Senate Grand Kleagle Robert Byrd, D-W.Va.,
is defending his decision to honor a once
prominent white supremacist politician by
naming the Senate's primary office building
after him, calling the notorious racist "my
mentor."

Byrd, a former Ku Klux Klansman, had
cosponsored the legislation that named the
Richard Russell Senate Office Building after
the long dead Georgia Democrat 31-years ago.

"He was kind of my mentor," Byrd said
recently, noting that Sen. Russell was known
as an expert on Senate rules, much like
himself.
