of coarse the worst thing that can happen in a democracy is for everyone to be of the same opinion.diversity of opinion is what makes democracy work.so even liberal and utopian idealists and delusionalist have their place and role to play as do "patriots" and conservatives.as long as people are free to question and critisise the policies of our gov our freedoms are safe.
I put "patriot" in " " because I do not know how to give the word a universaly accepted definition.

Temporarily give up some inconsequential freedoms???

My friend, once a freedom is given up, it is rarely given back, and the beat marches on....

What a load of garbage, Slider. IF our government had the cajones to stop GIVING away everything to illegal aliens, STOP immigration, STOP calling someone a citizen if they were born here with illegal parents, STOP letting people sue for ungodly amounts for ridiculous things, then we would not be having this debate. I live in no Utopia. I am not a liberal. I don't hate my country. But I do seek real answers and solutions to problems. You speak like the liberal. You don't want to limit services or our borders to any other people. You want to let everyone in, and then place limits on the freedoms of all people -- including real Americans. This is not about giving up "inconsequential freedoms." It's about ALLOWING problems that could have been stopped (and still could be) in order to pass new laws to dismantle the original intent of those who established this REPUBLIC. They've done it with the IRS, and now they are doing it to religion, speech, travel, personal information, money etc. etc. etc.

You are not seeing the forest for the trees. We are going the way of molding America into a washed down, new age, "everybody's okay" nation, or you are perhaps witnessing the destruction of that you claim to love.

I remain,

SOROS
