Gulf War I was the mother of all speed battles to which all other wars will be compared. However, there were critical differences that point out the truth of the old adage: Comparisons are odious.

1.- We were chasing the Iraqis out of Kuwait then with armor and lots of air power. They were out in the open, making wonderful targets. This is different--we are taking an enormous force into Baghdad. Doing so takes time.

No one has commented on whether our forces have gone past the line they reached during GWOne. If they haven't done so already, they are surely very close. The objectives are different, but the relative time line is probably comparable.

2.- This time the goal has been explicitly stated--regime change--and the battle of Baghdadgrad is rapidly approaching. Under those circumstances, it is reasonable to expect the Iraqis to fight a lot harder than they did the first time around. This will delay the end of the war to some extent butnot in any material sense.
