Robert,

re:The brutal Arab nations are full of corrupt, inhuman leaders like Saddam.

True, yet the proof we seek is more important to rebuild our relations with the rest of the "civilized" world and within our own country. Can you imagine the angst within the USA if nothing is found?

I think these are all good points. However, the issue is convincing everyone possible that Saddam indeed had the weapons. If there is only scant or partial evidence, then I believe that we will not convince all other reasonable nations that they existed in the first place. This will place Bush (and us) in a very precarious position.

Yet another reason that the failed Bush diplomacy will hurt us. We are now much more dependent on proof than we would have been with a UN mandate and coalition.

For instance, I think it is clear that this chemical plant was for producing illegal weapons, else why the camoflage and security. However, they could argue that it was used prior to the UN mandates, and not since. Yes, a very weak argument, but you'd be surprised at how willing people are to agree with what they'd like to believe is true (something that has made FOX News a lot of money).

Of course, finding a chemical plant containing nerve gas would be the 'smoking gun'. Let's hope we find it intact in order to minimize the danger to our troops and to convince the reasonable nations of the moral justification (some will never be convinced).
