Zonder: What I think I'm doing is illustrating quotes from the Koran, for example: "Kill the Mushrikun (polytheists, Christian and non-Muslims), wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush. But, if they repent and perform As-salat (public prayer with Muslims) and give Zakat (Islamic alms), then leave their way free. Allah is oft-forgiving, most merciful" (Sarat At-Taubah 9:5). When one reads that the holy book of the Muslims is out to whack Moi - Moi considers it appropriate to investigate further. The prose in your post required one glass of red wine to enable me to make it through. Thank you.

A very nice and well-reasoned post! But note this:- "A man or woman convinced against his or her will is of the same opinion still." ------------------------- Ever since 11th September 2001, waves of prejudice and hatred against Moslems have been sweeping over most of North America. However, like you, there are discerning folks who realize that it is only the extremist factions of the Islamic world that seek to do the US harm. However, many N. Americans who normally would tell you they are liberal-minded don't believe this: to a man they are convinced that ALL Moslems are rabid and foaming-at-the-mouth terrorists! And no amount of persuasion will convince them that they are mistaken. All too often they will glibly tell you they are right because the Qu'ran tells them so! A few lines here and a few lines there picked at random from the Qu'ran and a couple of documentary flicks on life in Moslem countries were all that convinced them that ALL Moslems are nogoodniks and enemies of the West. Isn't it remarkable that in an advanced and civilized country such as the USA is that such prejudice and hatred exist on such a grand scale? And so much so that if one posts anything on SI deemed supportive of Moslems in general, one would be viciously condemned as being anti-American, and castigated and pilloried. By the way, in the weeks following 9/11, a mother whose son was gassed in the last Gulf War went berserk on SI. She vowed revenge and declared that ALL Moslems had to be eliminated, no matter what, to ensure the safety of the West. Not knowing better, her admirers simply joined her and apparently obeyed her exhortations to keep the fire (of hate and revenge) burning at their homes. That woman also attemped to scare dissenting posters by compiling their names on a list. Oh, the silliness and madness that 9/11 had wrought! ------------------------------- I find it laughable that Bush at a recent press conference said with a straight face that 9/11 was "unprovoked" and this sentiment was echoed by his military top brass for several days on CNN. What those fellows seem to have forgotten (or would not like to admit) is that Clinton had tried to kill Osama bin Laden with a cruise missile immediately after Osama's cellphone signal betrayed his secret location and it was picked up by satellite. Fortunately for Osama, that missile meant for him did not explode. (Coincident with that attack, a number of terrorist camps in Afghanistan were destroyed by cruise missiles). One missile strayed into neighboring Pakistan. Realizing that an attempt was made on his life, Osama ben Laden vowed "spectacular" reprisals and he delivered on 9/11, about a year later. Osama gave ample warning! But many self-righteous Americans selectively forgot that Clinton had tried to kill Osama and they love to declare that 9/11 was "unprovoked". Nor could they understand that the Golden Rule ever operates inexorably. Is there any smoke without fire? What has hurt the pride of the US immeasurably is that despite its being the #1 superpower in science and technology --- with the state-of-the-art in practically everything --- and having numerous think-tanks to anticipate everything that might be inimical to the US, a ragtag team of Saudi and Egyptian pilots still managed to pull their spectacularly humiliating stunts on appropriately chosen targets. I believe that until people understand the history of the Middle East in general and the history colonialism there in particular and all the mischief and machinations and humiliations perpetrated by the colonial masters of the past, they will be unable to see the big picture of the ongoing strife between the Moslem world and the West. ------------------------------- Believe it or not: Immediately after America dropped the A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August 1945, Japanese nuclear scientists sent a telegram to their US counterparts for having succeeded in nuclear fission! Would you say that those Japanese scientists were heartless blokes or were they compulsive science-worshipers?
