That could be true at the same time, sure .... though part of the supposed dichotomy between the comments comes not only from completely changed circumstances, but from pre-attack responses of Chrétien in the commons being contrasted with those of Graham in a scrum after the attack was on .... too many differences here to translate it into a change of policy .... once the thing is a fait accompli, of course we want to see resulting from it the least possible lasting damage

Cellucci trying to sell us on the war this morning .... well it is a free country, he has a right to speak ... he's presenting current US actions as self-defense against a threat to their security, laying a guilt trip on us for not participating ..... but it doesn't wash - attacking iraquis in this unilaterally militarist manner was not the only option, not even close to the best option, many believe ... instead of reducing threats to security it may well increase them

There are also those that feel had Canada and others joined to present a solid front to IRAQ this war might have been avoided. Instead it was like having a 2 man advantage in a hockey game and then pulling 3 guys off the ice because the french guy was worried about losing his T-shirt sales to the other team.

I think it was Churchill that said something to the effect that appeasers feed the alligators in the hope they get eaten last.

What Graham and Chretien are trying to do is to make the U.S. administration's handling of foreign relations look skillful. Unfortunately, they're succeeding. They've been playing to the anti-American constituency, as if those people were too stupid to figure out that behind the rhetoric there was support. At the same time, they've devalued that support in the eyes of anyone watching in the U.S. It's like, "Let's have a contest -- let's just see how badly we can play our hand!"
