I really encourage everyone to try and put their prejudices aside and read about the various cultures from different authors and perspectives.

Well, to be slapped upside the head and labeled prejudiced isn't what I expected.

I'm a product of my experiences; this thread helps in expanding those experiences. It was why I asked.

You won't ever catch me saying that westerners understand middle easterners; nor the other way around. There are thousands of years that have gone into building each culture.

Your example of Iran reads well. I wonder though, currently, aren't they experiencing their own inner turmoil ? I seem to have read quite a bit about the younger Iranians standing up to the "older" religious leaders.

Iran has no issues with Kurds in Iraq or other neighboring middle eastern states ?

I have the perfect example for you. I am quoting this from Sandra Mackey's book The Iranians: Persia, Islam, and the Soul of a Nation.

A friend of mine has a group of Persians (which is what they prefer to be called, rather than Iranians), at work and what you're saying is consistent with what he's told me about the country.

They like all expats from the country use the internet widely to communicate with friends and family back home, there's some web censorship but email still works well.

"Tribes in Iran live peacefully and successfully". Sure, the only problem is with the rabbis and American diplomats. All spies!

OTOH, it could very well be peaceful for AQ guys.
