Look at Canada as well. We are probably more ethnically diverse than the US but we take a very different approach to culture. The US is the 'melting pot' and Canada is the 'mosaic' where people keep much of their original culture (at least until the 3rd generation). There is a strong Canadian identity that generally co-exists with the originating identity.

I suggest if u watch an international cricket match in which India is playing, you might change your mind on "Indian identity".
