<The US does it less than most>

Tell it to the people of Hiroshima.
And Dresden.
And My Lai.
Tell it to the people who walked the Trail of Tears,
and 100 other tribes we ethnically cleansed.
Tell it to the Cubans and Phillipinoes who fought against our colonial armies of occupation 105 years ago,
and still remember it.
Tell it to the Disappeared, taken away by the death squads of Chile's Pinochet and Iran's Shah
and 30 other dictators we put in power.
Tell it to them, and see if you can continue to SeeNoEvilHearNoEvil.

We are not devils. But we aren't angels, either. And our enemies aren't devils, although it makes it so much easier to kill them, if we believe they are.

My pessimism, about our ability to make Iraq a democracy, is based on an un-romanticised knowledge of our history.
