elmat,

You are entirely too dismissive.

The Swiss now hold "America's Cup". Though I wished they held America's balls.

George Bush is the most reprehensible human on the planet. It is completely unseemly that that the world is totally run by the testosterone level of one "C" level student. How did we happen to become so debased? Why is it that the stupid playground bully has become the master of the universe?

How did humanity become so stupid as to allow an insect like Bush to take over our collective future?

Maurice, Jay,

You got any answers as to how an idiot child of America can be calling the tune?

I sure don't. And I live here.

elmatador,

The Swiss, 600 years of democracy produced only the cockoo watch.

Since you brought up the subject, a little anecdote...

Sometime back in the 1950's or 1960's, some entrepreneurs went to the Swiss watchmakers, who were widely recognized (and undisputed) as the creators of the world's best watches, with a new concept for telling time. The idea was revolutionary at the time, never before heard of, and with considerable risks.

The Swiss gladly accepted the concept, studied it for a fair amount of time, and finally rejected the concept, ridiculing the new idea as preposterous and economically unfeasible.

With their tails between their legs, the entrepreneurs departed Switzerland, disappointed and perhaps a bit embarrassed.

But there was a changing paradigm in play that neither the Swiss nor the entrepreneurs recognized.

The Japanese had read of this new concept, and read of the Swiss contempt for it. They invited its inventors to Japan to demonstrate the concept. The Japanese liked what they saw. They entered in contracts with the entrepreneurs to manufacture and retail this new concept.

Of course, the rest is history. The new concept was an instant hit, not only in Japan, but especially in America. The concept sold like hot cakes, as simply everyone had to own one. The product was inexpensive compared to Swiss watches. More importantly, the new concept was far more accurate overall than all of the inexpensive Swiss products, and the novelty of it practically sold itself.

We are talking about the world's first mass produced digital watches. The single most important advance in time keeping for the common man was first offered to the Swiss, who failed to recognize its potential and scorned the Japanese when the Asian nation announced that they would manufacture and market the new product.

Who woulda thunk it??? Changing paradigms...

The story has nothing to do with what you were discussing. Merely an amusing anecdote that I remembered when you mentioned the Swiss and their watches...
