Agreed... but in reality, I think we're assuming that a Texan will be running the country. Let's face it... they hate us over there...

Some do.. some don't. They love American culture, but somehow they've permitted themselves to be brainwashed into believing the US and Israel are acting in concert to subjugate them... No one pays attention to the fact that, were it not for the US pressuring France and Britain to decolonize after WWII, they would likely still be subjects of those respective empires.

The real hurdle that needs to be leaped is the formation of a Palestinian state, and the US showing strong pressure upon Israel to accept one (given their security concerns are met). This should go far toward deflating any rational arguments for justifying hatred of Americans that we find currently amongst the muslims in the region..

Thomas Friedman has had some very coverage of what we're seeing in the region. It's been long expected that we'd see the muslim world come to an internal crisis regarding the path they should take. The regressionists, primarily the Moslem Brotherhood and Wahabbists (and Khomeini in Iran) have long advocated a return to prior "glory" and an Islamic state. Reinstitution of Sharia and strict adherence to the Koran. And they are gaining credibility and respect because every other system the Muslim world has tried has failed.. Socialism, Capitalism.. what have you.. But the young muslims, post 9/11, are suffering a sort of cultural cognitive dissonance. They like to see the US get their come-uppance because of our power and prestige, but they also recognize that militant theocratic rule is not something they want to live under either.. So they are having this debate.. a form of Islamic reformation movement, which is likely to be rather bloody and contentious. (the christian reformation certainly was)..

These systems have failed because of the corruption and lack of accountability their governments have had to their people. They look at the success Israel has had and they are jealous. They perceive the Jews and Americans as conspiring to repress them, when the reality is that the Israelis just want to be left alone and the Americans just want(ed) stability so we could oppose the Soviets, and now, to just do business..

It's been long held that the only solution to the Middle East problem would be one that was imposed from the outside, and which was equitable to all the majority players. But rulers such as Saddam, Assad, and Arafat, there is nothing to be gained unless it involves Arab the destruction of Israel and unifying the Arab peoples.

We are removing Arafat's primary support base, Iraq, from the equation.. Once that is accomplished, we'd better resolve the Palestinian issue and defuse that timebomb...

The political "swamp" that has led to this Islamic reactionarism, must be drained, and made arable for economic opportunity for all of the people in the region.

We may very well fail.. but doing nothing guarantees failure..
