Absolutely I wouldn't want to have lived in Iraq, over the last 10 years or ever.

But I think that whatever my country, I would be likely to take arms to defend it against foreign invaders.

As others have said here, plenty of people fought for Stalin... Note that the Taliban, by and large, were foreigners. The warlords were the indigenous leaders.. they're still there and people still willingly fight for them.

what are they afraid of?
Try looking at it from their point of view. A larger, hugely richer, incalculably stronger country has already crushed your army once, and then spent 12 years bombing you, shooting down your planes if they try flying in your own country, and enforcing harsh sanctions against you.
Now they invade again. They say it's for your own good, as they bomb your comrades-in-arms and launch missiles at your capital. They say they're going to free you, while they burn down your leader's palace (you don't like the leader, but it it after all wartime so you rally behind him)...
<edit> and they say they will respect you if you surrender, but you saw the pictures of men with bags on their heads being escorted to open cages and chained there...
what do you expect?
