The British occupied Iraq for a good part of the 20th Century and it wasn't a very pleasant experience for the Iraqi people. The British dropped chemical weapons from airplanes on rebellious Iraqis. The first time that was ever done. I'm sure the Iraqis have a memory of what it felt like to be occupied by a foreign force. As ruthless as Saddam's rule has been, patriotism is a very strong force. The ultimate success of this war campaign will rest upon whether the Iraqis overcome their patriotism and are ready to accept another colonial rule.

the war in Iraq is about to get even tougher for Lt. Gen. William S. Wallace. He ignited the ire of the White House by observing publicly that Pentagon war strategists had misunderstood the combativeness of Iraqi fighters. The miscalculation, he said, had stalled the coalition's drive toward Baghdad.
