The bill's structure was just insurance in case the Democrats got back in, because it would force them to "raise" taxes that had not yet been "cut" just to get enough revenues to run their programs. I view that as political gamesmanship, which I don't really like from either side.

The Wall Street Journal has been starting the drumbeat to keep the tax cuts in place. I think cutting taxes is a good thing but paying for homeland security and the war should be done as contemporaneously as possible with the costs being incurred.

Therefore, instead of halving the tax cut, I would favor deferring the tax cut timetable to address the deficit issues this year, then restarting the cut next year.
