Reportedly Bush Sr. intervened, told GW to try and build more of a coalition on Iraq and to start talking to North Korea. GW either did not take his father's advice or was too far down the wrong track by then to change course.

We hope the Bush Administration starts talking with the NK's though. Talk is cheap and doesn't cost a single life. But stonewalling can provoke antagonism from a crazy, desperate regime.
