I have company so I will just say, "good comments". I will only add that I don't think the stance was pertinent to the "French Connections" of the PM. It was a Liberal response consistent with Liberal ideology. And it was not a remission of support for the US, but rather a lack of support for warfare without a broader consensus.

It must be remembered that the US can make enemies, and even dare them; but Canada ought not to cultivate overt enemies unless circumstances absolutely force them to violence.

Just as the US has in the past pursued an isolationist policy...so may Canada (with good reason) exercise an abundance of caution before encouraging enmity from scores of countries and their resident Canadian citizens...
