That can go in either direction. What if it was a stand-off in Quebec or Ontario which both happened in recent times? Were these civil wars?

History overwhelmingly refers to the skirmishes with Dumont and company as a "Rebellion". Many (if not ALL) of the rebels had never considered themselves citizens of the Dominion of Canada. They were forcibly brought into the Donminion's compass, and fought--not to overthrow the National Government (the Government of the Country)--but to remain as a territory under self government.

Still, as I said--I take no quarrel with the characterization as a civil war, if you wish. But under the circumstances I fancy such language as being rather more figurative than informing.
