Perhaps you should research hybrids and drive one yourself. If I don't hot rod my car and drive it 105 mph on the way to work, I can get 50 mpg and more some days.

It does not contain a fuel cell. That tank of gasoline may blow your butt to the moon perhaps. Perhaps you also fear accidental ignition of internally produced methane gas as well? Did u read an article discussing the hazards of same?

I drive a Honda Insight, get wonderful mileage and I enjoy my car very very much, thank you.

What kind of car do you drive, a GTO?

Tim,
We do need to reduce our dependence on imported oil. The transportation sector of our economy consumes about 13 M BBL/D. Of the imports, about 3M BBL/D come from Mideast.
By mandating higher fuel efficiency (ie about 20 - 25%) we can eliminate our dependence on Mideastern oil. There are several ways of achieving this: same size vehicles with different propulsion systems (hybrid vehicles, diesel engines), lighter weight materials, or smaller vehicles with current gasoline engines, or conversion to natural gas. The technology is here and now. As usual, Japanese companies (Toyota) lead in the development and rollout.
MIT recently conducted a study which agreed with CARB that we need not wait 10 years for hybrids.

Gary
