I agree the hybrids are the most interesting compromise going right now. I would consider one myself if they reach a critical mass on the road. However, my opinion is they are only practical now for short commuter type trips.

I have not bought an SUV primarily because they guzzle too much gas. However, if you drive on California highways there is no way I would want to be in a hybrid with some lunatic SUV idiot on my tail. So when the SUV's die away (which I hope they do) I'd be more comfortable in a hybrid. Everything is a compromise.

Perhaps the best solution would be to mandate the use of hybrid vehicles in the fleets of the U.S. and state governments. I would support that and it would have some small impact on our oil consumption.
