I merely asked how his visit went.

Could you explain the sentiment?

May be I can be of some help, since I wend to University there and have family I visit every year.

I'd say the biggest difference between Canada and US is in their outlook.

Americans are friendlier and share more. Canadians are more reserved but also more polite.

Canadians are more patient. Americans want to get the show on he road.

Americans believe in the use of force (and not just against other countries). Canadians prefer not to.

Americans believe in harsh capitalism and great generosity (well some of them do). Canadians believe in more social equity.

America believes in being the melting pot. Canada is the mosaic.

As a friend of mine put it, "You have the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness in America. But in Canada good government is your birthright".

The differences are not so obvious as what you eat or how much leisure time you have. But they are there and they are strong. Wal-Mart for example had a much harder time than they'd anticipated in penetrating Canada. It would not have been so we were very similar.

Final note, as very rough sketch, east coast Canada is more like West coast US than not. And West coast Canada is somewhere in the middle of the Pacific :)
