John, that sort of takes me back to Friedman's Sunday column, nytimes.com . I think he may have gotten it backwards. I think there's a reasonable chance that the US would have a much easier time as a postwar peacekeeping force in Afghanistan than in Iraq. It's pretty clear the Afghans regarded the Taliban as a foreign element, and are relatively receptive to American presence. It's not at all clear that Iraq is going to be that receptive to an American presence. The PNAC determination to run the show through to the end without "international interference" (or whatever pejorative they want to invent ) may not be particularly advantageous to us.

Things could turn around, there could still be sudden insurrections and massive joy at "liberation" in the streets. Or maybe not, and there's going to be a city by city slog. The later wouldn't be too pleasant, but it would put the grand PNAC scheming on hold for a while, anyway.

We should all hope State wins this one.

Boy, I hope not! Take a good look at the makeup and operation of those UN and NGO teams in Kosovo. Didn't you read "The Mission?" I know The Author castigated the setup there.

It will be a US run operation, with some UN "Windowdressing" to keep Blair's position from getting to much flack. The Arabs media is going to castigate us no matter what we do, so we might as well do it right and not worry about them.

John, you are too concerned about "Form" over "Substance."
