there was no back up available should the Republican Guard have presented a greater problem for our forces in place

What kind of "problem" might the "Elite Republican Guard" present? They have no tanks left; they have no artillery; they have no supplies; they have no munitions; they have no air power.

Without these items, the Republican Guard present little threat to our guys. Franks knew that from the outset, as did Rumsfeld.

I think you don't fully comprehend what a stomping the Iraqis are receiving at the hands of this inept war plan put together by incompetents.

Small units, particularly in guerrilla warfare, can be very damaging.

Usually they are not very damaging. In Vietnam the heaviest damage was from NVA regulars not the Viet Cong. The NVA regulars would use conventional tactics in many cases but strategically they could still fight a guerilla war because they could go back North or into neighboring countries when they didn't want to fight and we usually would not follow them. What's tough about the small guerilla units is that there can be a lot of them and they can be hard to run down. They can cause small amounts of damage for awhile and can be a real headache but they are not normally a serious threat to any large unit. They harrass the larger units and hit it with pin pricks while trying not to get hammered by the return blow.
