"I think Heinlein meant there should be a more direct manifestation of God than simply the words of prophets"

The birth, life, words, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Jesus are the manifestation of his divinity.

All historical figures and historical events demand a certain amount of trust and faith. We all depend on objective historical data, preferably contemporary eyewitnesses, to shape our understanding and beliefs about the great personalities of the past. Our understanding of Alexander the Great, or Genghis Khan, or Hannibal depends upon reliable and objective historical data and the predisposition and discernment of the reader. If you approach historical records with a bias, you will read that bias into the narrative.

It is the same with Jesus and the eyewitness historical records compiled in what we call the New Testament. The NT collection contains the eyewitness accounts of a number of contemporaries who claim to have witnessed first hand the things they write about. When we approach these historical records, we must not try to impose the biases of the present historical era on the past. It is a common weakness of all to read into the past our present misconceptions.

Approach the historical records in the New Testament with an objective sincerity that seeks to find and know the truth rather than to seek to confirm one's preconceived ideas and prejudices.

A sober note: The greatest minds of Western Civilization, the minds who established the intellectual, scientific and spiritual foundation of our modern Western Culture, examined these documents critically and objectively and concluded that Jesus was indeed the divine son of God.
