"The pervasive ignorance in this country, of what is significant in the Muslim world, is going to cost many lives."

In a year's time the validity of this statement will be painfully evident.

Tolerance & understanding is a two way street.

A statement that strikes me as neither tolerant nor understanding.

Much of what is posted on this thread is far too frequently
like that statement of yours. One sided & Anti-American.

While I strongly believe that the misguided view you espouse has seriously injured both the reputation and the security of this country, it would never occur to me to call you Anti-American. I guess that's part of that tolerance & understanding.

Their ignorance of us, much of it false & misleading, is
fed to them by their governments & their religious leaders.
If they bring death & destruction to innocent civilians
with terrorist atrocities, it will be at their severe
peril. There is absolutely no excuse for either types of
behavoir. And the former in no way justifies the latter. I
will support their demise if they choose terrorism over
understanding & tolerance.

While it is certainly true that ignorance exists, it was the lack of ignorance of the west that was bothering Bin Luddite. He correctly saw that western culture was quite seductive to Muslim youth. As for I will support their demise if they choose terrorism over understanding & tolerance. - perhaps the less said, the better (I'm trying to give you an example of tolerance and understanding).

We are a peaceful nation. However, evil cannot be allowed to thumb its' nose at us & threaten our security. The Butcher of Baghdad did just that. Diplomacy, peace &
tolerance utterly failed after 12 long years.

I'm sure you know there is considerable worldwide doubt about just how peaceful we are. As for Saddam has threaten our security, even you should see through that flimsy neo-con propaganda. Do you understand the meaning of the word forgery?

If certain extremists choose to use this action to attack US interests or its' citizens, it will be their mistake.

I assume by action, you mean our invasion and planned occupation of Iraq. I sorry to tell you, but it's not just the extremists any more. It's across the board. As for mistakes, I believe it was a mistake to provoke such a widespread reaction.

They should choose peace & tolerance first, just like the US did with the Butcher of Baghdad. They will find that we can be very They should choose peace & tolerance first, just like the US did with the Butcher of Baghdad. They will find that we can be very understanding & tolerant in a civil dispute.

Unfortunately they have a good understanding of just how tolerant we are.

If you are in jr. High, and someone comes along and just pokes you in the eye, the reaction is to poke back. Unfortunately some people never get beyond jr. High. The key word in the above sentence is reaction. Reaction implies no thought. Nothing higher than the medulla gets involved. Anyone that used their pre-frontal lobes quickly realized that Bin Luddite poked us in the eye, hoping we would poke back. He knew that there was a cultural war raging, and his side was losing. He needed to change the equation. If he could just create the fervor of a religious war, maybe his side had a chance to win the minds of the Middle Eastern youth. So he had called for jihad, but other than the extremists, no one responded. He just didn't have the clout. Then to satisfy a neo-con fantasy, and in opposition to the world, we invade Iraq. Al-Azhar calls for jihad, and presto Bin Luddite has what he wants.

"We are a peaceful nation."

The following is a list of overt or semi-overt military and administration sponsored paramilitary operations since the election of Ronald Reagan:

Lebanon/Syria
El Salvador
Nicaragua
Afganistan
Iraq/Iran
Pakistan
Libya
Grenada
Panama
Columbia
Bolivia
Iraq
Bosnia/Serbia
Kosovo/Serbia
Afganistan
Philipines
Iraq

I may have left out a few, but you get my drift, right?
Can you find me an example of a less "peaceful nation"?
Looking backward from 1980 doesn't really look better until you get back before WWII, and even then our peacefulness was very selective and sporadic. Of those listed, only our recent attack on the Taliban in Afganistan could reasonably be considered a counterattack in self-defense. All of the others have been examples of us throwing our weight around where we had no business doing so, and often leading to unfortunate unintended consequences for ourselves and/or others.

Also, can you tell me which country in the world has the largest arsenal of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons? Can you tell me which country is the only one ever to use nuclear weapons on a civilian population? Do you know anything?
