meaning its future embodiments as well--Syria, Iran, whatever

Taking a dip in the deep end today, John?

Serious democracy would mean governments deeply opposed to US interests.

Interesting point. However, is "serious democracy" really possible in that part of the world right now - under ANY circumstances? Those poor people had been forever oppressed and brainwashed and thorn apart by their dictators and by religious "authorities" of all shades. I think they'll need a period of relative stability and personal safety before they can begin to "seriously" make up their minds.

Yep, that is State's argument, John. You and Henry the K are on the same page. Small world. I think it will end up closer to Turkey's example, were the people don't like our Gov, no matter who is in office, butlike us and want to make a buck for themselves and their children.
