Those poor people had been forever oppressed and brainwashed and thorn apart by their dictators and by religious "authorities" of all shades. I think they'll need a period of relative stability and personal safety before they can begin to "seriously" make up their minds.

My guess is that line won't work, at least not in that form. The Bush admin has been quite explicit in offering ME democracy as one of the many rationales for this invasion. Moreover, the almost instantenous character of information flow these days means that there will be more than a small amount of clamour in Iraq alone for democracy and self determination. That will, of course, stand in great tension with the US plans for an ME that is in accord with US security needs, including the dependency of the global economy on access to ME oil.
