Sun Tzu, I was unable at this time to struggle through the entire article, but it appears that Barber's thesis about the "McWorld" globalism vs. the Jihad tribalism is totally off mark. Militant fundamentalist Jihadis have universalist claims, and they are dead serious and uncompromising about them.

Here is a recent editorial by Barber, posted on his very own Web site:

>>The passing of communism has torn away the thin veneer of internationalism (workers of the world unite!) to reveal ethnic prejudices that are not only ugly and deep-seated but increasingly murderous.<<

Another central thesis that I think is completely wrong. The Soviet Union didn't become unified through the workers of Central Asia and Eastern Europe voluntarily uniting with Russia. The Soviet Empire was achieved through murder and violence. Millions were killed or deliberately displaced.

Yes, there is ethnic prejudice but the real reason for the fight is that the collapse of the Soviet Union caused a power vacuum, and there is no tradition of democracy, only of thugocracy.

Capitalism and democracy are naturally related because neither can exist without the freedom and independence of the individual nor without the rule of law.
